The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of the leading research universities. The university draws its strengths from both the diversity and the proximity of scientific and engineering disciplines on a single, coherent campus. This highly dynamic setting enables students and researchers to work across traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties.
A PhD position is available at the Institute for Experimental Physics II „Reactive Plasmas“ at Ruhr-University Bochum in the frame of the DFG-funded project „PlasNOW – Transport of biologically relevant molecules from the plasma discharge to the biological target in controlled (humid) environments“.
It is generally accepted that NO represents one of the essential regulative factor in physiology and pathophysiology of wound healing. Therefore, the analysis of the impact of plasma generated nitrogen containing species in the gas phase on the generation of species in the liquid phase is of great importance. This analysis is in particular essential regarding biomedical plasma application as these species are in turn responsible for chemical responses or modifications of biomolecules and treated tissues.
In cooperation with a partner project the goal is a detailed fundamental understanding of the influence of operation conditions on two distinctly different plasma sources, a direct and an indirect one, on the plasma itself and the plasma-liquid interface. In order to compare the gained results to other plasma sources applied in that field, the whole chain from electrical power input to NO output under most important conditions will be investigated and quantified, if possible time and spatially resolved. Thereby, reactive species densities will be systematically analysed and quantified in the gas phase as well as in the liquid phase. By observing the behavior of distinct biomolecules, this procedure determines the way to optimize certain densities with regard to the biomedical application of the plasma sources. In this way, process optimization based on scientific understanding will be feasible.
The whole chain will be completed from the plasma generation to the impact on liquids, biomolecules, cells and biological tissues in close collaboration with groups from bioinorganic chemistry and medicine. This interdisciplinary collaboration adds the expertise and instrumentation for investigating reactive species in aqueous solution and modifications of biomolecules. With this rather interdisciplinary approach the understanding of the interactions of plasma with liquids and models with clinical relevance will be enhanced.
The focus within this project lies on the plasma research. According to our expertise we will provide support to the collaborating groups and share our results with them.
The research is an integral part of the Research Department “Plasmas with complex interaction”, a thematic priority of the Ruhr-University Bochum encompassing 200 researchers (m/f/d) in various plasma related disciplines ranging from electrical engineering, biology to experimental and theoretical physics. It is one of the largest academic plasma centers in Europe.
If the position is funded by third-party funds the employee has no teaching obligation.
The salary is according to TV-L 12/13 (29,87 h/w) and the position is limited to 36 months.
Travel expenses for interviews cannot be refunded.
At Ruhr-Universität Bochum, we wish to promote careers of women in areas in which they have been underrepresented, and we would therefore like to encourage female candidates to send us their applications. Applications by suitable candidates (m/f/d) with severe disabilities and other applicants with equal legal status are likewise most welcome.
Candidates (m/f/d) are requested to have a Master level in physics with outstanding quality and experience in plasma physics, diagnostics and technology. Experiences with optical in particular laser diagnostics and in biochemistry would be favourable. It is also expected that the candidates (m/f/d) are team players and can work well in interdisciplinary environments. Candidates (m/f/d) will guide master and bachelor students and are engaged in the teaching duties of the group.
