Beschreibung

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of the leading research universities. The German Science Foundation (DFG) has funded a new Research unit on “Diffusion Chronometry of magmatic systems” (FOR 2881) to be hosted at the Ruhr Universität Bochum and the Leibniz Universität Hannover for the next 3 years. The objective is to carry out experimental measurements and develop theoretical modelling tools for diffusion chronometry in various high temperature systems – the focus will be on igneous systems, but most tools will be very much applicable to metamorphic systems and meteorites as well.

Within the scope of this project we are seeking candidates (m/f/d) to fill 1 PhD student position (Bochum) and 3 post-doctoral positions (1 in Bochum, 2 in Hannover). The detailed requirements for each of the positions and the projects, as well as the names of contacts for each project, are provided below

For all of the positions, the following skills are required:

  • Strong interest in interdisciplinary work and scientific exchange within the Research unit
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team with international collaborations
  • Excellent management and communication skills
  • Very good computer and written and oral skills in English.

If the position is funded by third-party funds the employee has no teaching obligation.

Anforderungsprofil

We are looking for a PhD candidate (m/f/d) to measure accurate diffusion coefficients of Fe-Mg and various trace elements in orthopyroxene as a function of different variables, including a quantification of the dependence of diffusion rates on major element composition (Mg#) and redox conditions. A novel combination of experimental and analytical techniques will be used to achieve these goals. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) of thin films on natural single crystals of orthopyroxene will allow to study diffusion in orthopyroxene on the nano-scale using state-of-the-art analytical techniques like FIB-SEM, TEM, and TOF-SIMS. The achieved data set will be of wide use for petrologists and geochemists for diverse applications including diffusion chronometry, geothermobarometry, and geochronology.

The position is a fixed term contract for 36 months (TVL E13, 29,87 h/w, salary based on the Collective Agreement for the German Public Service).

Requirements:

  • Strong background (MSc or equivalent) in Earth science or related disciplines, ideally with a deeper background in petrology and mineralogy
  •  An interest in experimental work and quantitative modelling.

Desirable:

  • Experience in experimental petrology
  • Coding experience with Matlab, C++, etc..
