The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of the leading research universities. The university draws its strengths from both the diversity and the proximity of scientific and engineering disciplines on a single, coherent campus. This highly dynamic setting enables students and researchers to work across traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties.

The German Science Foundation (DFG) has funded a new Research unit on “Diffusion Chronometry of magmatic systems” (FOR 2881) to be hosted at the Ruhr Universität Bochum and the Leibniz Universität Hannover for the next 3 years. The objective is to carry out experimental measurements and develop theoretical modelling tools for diffusion chronometry in various high temperature systems – the focus will be on igneous systems, but most tools will be very much applicable to metamorphic systems and meteorites as well.

Within the scope of this project we are seeking candidates (m/f/d) to fill 1 PhD student position (Bochum) and 3 post-doctoral positions (1 in Bochum, 2 in Hannover). The detailed requirements for each of the positions and the projects, as well as the names of contacts for each project, are provided below

For all of the positions, the following skills are required:

  • Strong interest in interdisciplinary work and scientific exchange within the Research unit
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team with international collaborations
  • Excellent management and communication skills
  • Very good computer and written and oral skills in English.

If the position is funded by third-party funds the employee has no teaching obligation.

To apply for any of the positions, please send a CV, names of two referees, a motivation letter, grades and overview of techniques and methods used previously in a single Pdf fileby email before 30.11.2020 to the respective contact person named below. All candidates (m/f/d) will work collaboratively with scientists and labs in both, Bochum and Hannover, but the primary affiliation (location of employment) for each position is indicated below separately.

Travel expenses for interviews cannot be refunded.

At Ruhr-Universität Bochum, we wish to promote careers of women in areas in which they are underrepresented, and we would therefore like to encourage female candidates to send us their applications. Applications by suitable candidates with severe disabilities and other applicants with equal legal status are likewise most welcome.

We are seeking a Post-doctoral scientist (m/f/d) to develop user-friendly programs for diffusion modelling in different kinds of systems. A strong background in numerical methods and code development is required, with experience in Fortran, Python and Matlab. Experience with Java and development of web-based programming will be an advantage, as will be experience with modelling of mass and heat transport, and specifically, diffusion related processes and moving boundary problems. A background in Geochemistry – Petrology is desired but not required.

The position is a fixed term contract for 36 months (TVL E13, 39,83 h/w, salary based on the Collective Agreement for the German Public Service).
