The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of the leading research universities in Europe. The university draws its strengths from both the diversity and the proximity of scientific and engineering disciplines on a single, coherent campus. This highly dynamic setting enables students and researchers to work across traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties.

The newly founded Faculty of Computer Science (www.informatik.rub.de) unites all ongoing computer science activities at RUB in an interdisciplinary manner. The research and teaching area of IT security, in which our university has been a leader in Europe for over 20 years, plays a central role in the new Faculty. This is also reflected in the Cluster of Excellence CASA (www.casa.rub.de), which is funded as part of the Federal Government's Excellence Initiative, in which over 100 researchers develop effective measures against cyberattacks.

For the newly established Chair of "Data Driven Security" held by Prof. Dr. Ghassan Karame, several full-time academic staff positions (currently 39.83 hours / week = 100%) are to be filled as soon as possible. These positions are initially limited for 3 years.

The members of Prof. Karame's Chair conduct research and teaching in various areas of IT security. The Chair offers various courses in the Bachelor's and Master’s degree programs and participates in several third-party funded projects. This international and dynamic team also cooperates with several university and non-university institutions (e.g., the Max Planck Institute).

The load of teaching will be calculated according to §3 of Lehrverpflichtungsverordnung (state of North Rhine-Westphalia).

Required Experience & Skills

  • Blockchain security and privacy
    • Analyzing and improving the security, performance, and scalability of cryptocurrencies and modern blockchain platforms
  • Platform security
    • Devising new solutions to secure platforms using hardware support
  • Machine learning security and privacy
    • Enhancing the security of machine learning algorithms against attacks and relying on secure machine learning algorithms to protect existing platforms.

Additional responsibilities include the execution of third-party funded projects by public or private partners, as well as supporting other tasks in the Chair, for example the organization of scientific conferences or the preparation of research proposals (e.g. BMBF, DFG or EU).

The employment relationship is based on the collective agreement of the Länder (TV-L). The grouping takes place depending on the fulfillment of the personal or collective bargaining requirements in the salary group E 12/13 TV-L.
